Excretion Flashcards
Liver lobule
cylindrical structure which makes up the liver made up of hepatocytes with branches of the hepatic artery, hepatic portal vein, and bile duct running through it. hepatic vein located in the centre.
hepatic pottal vein
the blood vessel which carries blood from parts of the small intestine to the liver
bile
A substance produced by the liver to emulsify fats. Stored in the gall bladder
kupffer cell
cells attached to the hepatocytes in liver lobules which produce bile
deamination
the process of converting excess amino acids into ammonia and organic acids
ornithine cycle
The process in which ammonia and carbon dioxide are turned into urea and water
renal capsule
outer membrane of the kidney
cortex
outer area of the kidney
medulla
inner area of the kidney
glomerulus
A bundle of capillaries that loop inside the Bowman’s capsule of a nephron. Where ultrafiltration takes place
Ultrafiltration
Filtering of the blood under high pressure in the glomerulus
Selective reabsorption
Reabsorption of useful substances from filtrate into the blood as it passes through the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle and distal convoluted tubule. Useful molecules move across be active transport and facilitated diffusion and water moves across by osmosis
