Fermentation is a reversible process in plant cells
False
Glucose———) ……… carbon dioxide
Pyruvate
Where does fermentation occur
Cytoplasm
Where does aerobic respiration occur in plant and animal cells
Mitochondrion
Name the energy producing process which starts in the cytoplasm and is completed in the mitochondria
Aerobic respiration
The two raw materials for aerobic respiration are?
Glucose and oxygen
Stage one of respiration requires oxygen to occur
False
Give an example of a cellular activity that uses ATP
Cell division
Under what condition would the fermentation pathway occur
No oxygen is present
Write the fermentation word equation that takes place in plant and yeast cells.
Glucose + oxygen———) ethanol + carbon dioxide
Cells that need a lot of energy have a large number of mitochondria, e.g.
sperm, liver, muscle, neurones, companion cells.
Give a cellular activity that requires ATP
Breakdown of glucose
Fermentation in animal cells
Fermentation is the incomplete breakdown of glucose without oxygen. When the oxygen supply runs out, the pyruvate is converted into lactate. This will cause muscle fatigue. The breakdown of one glucose molecule to pyruvate then to lactate would therefore only produce a small quantity of energy from the breakdown of glucose to pyruvate.
