Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration. Through a selectively permeable membrane.
Is osmosis a passive process?
Yes.
What is the word used to describe a cell when the cell wall is stretched to a maximum?
Turgid.
What gets swollen when water moves int the cell by osmosis?
Vacuole.
What is pushed against the cell wall?
Cytoplasm.
What is the process of extreme water loss in plant cells called?
Plasmolysis/ plasmolysed.
Plasmolysed
Plant Cell= dehydrated
Water concentration higher in the cell than outside cell. Water moves out cell by osmosis.
Turgid
Water concentration lower in cell than out cell causing water to move in the cell by osmosis.
What would the appearance of a plant cell look like after being placed in pure water after 30 mins?
The cell would become turgid.
A plant cell in tap water will
Become turgid
A red blood cell in a strong salt solution will
Shrivel
