In acute asthma, what would you advise a patient to do? (adults and children)
adults-
4 initial pumps of the SABA inhaler then 2 pumps every 2 minutes via a spacer
MAX 10 PUMPS
- Repeat every 10-20 minutes
Children-
- 1 puff every 30–60 seconds
- up to 10 puffs
- If the response is poor, give further doses while awaiting hospital admission, and switch to a nebulizer if available.
Explain the treatment for lower respiratory tract infection
What is it?
This is an infection in the airways of the lungs. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria
Viruses:
Self limiting after around 3 days the infection should begin to get better
- Advise on rest and fluids
Bacteria:
Abx- Amoxicillin 5/7 - should start to see improvements in sx by day 3
- Also plenty of fluids and rest
- Regular analgesia for the pain (if any)

Explain why abx aren’t used for a viral infection
Assess and explain acute asthma with the initial steps in management
Practise informing a patient with an abnormal chest X-ray that they need a 2 week rule referral
