o Describe findings, explain diagnosis & management for: otitis media

A

What is it?
An infection of the inner ear. Usually lasts 3-7 days

Findings:

  • Bulging eardrum - red
  • cloudy tympanic membrane

Management:

  1. Regular analgesia
  2. Fluids - stay hydrated

Safetynet:

If symptoms are getting worse by day 3 or not improved after a week seek medical advice

Equally if fever, unwell, vomiting etc go A+E for immediate help

What is a goitre?
Swelling of the thyroid gland that causes a lump to appear at the front of the neck

Diagnosis +Findings:

  • -> 5 different types of goitre

  1. Graves disease
    - Usually symmetrically enlarged
    - NO nodules
    - There may be a bruit
  2. Toxic multinodular goitre
    - Non-tender thyroid nodules
  3. Toxic adenoma
    - Unilateral, non-tender thyroid mass
  4. Subacute thyroiditis
    - Tender, firm, irregular, diffusely enlarged thyroid gland
    - May be asymmetrical.
  5. Amiodarone-induced thyroiditis
    - small goitre is commonly seen
