poverty line
statistic that is used to determine the number of people in poverty in the US
- international poverty line is $2.15 per day
situational poverty
when a person falls below a poverty line because of a certain life event
- often temporary
- could include natural disasters, divorce, health problems
relative poverty
when people have inadequate financial resources and fall below the prevailing standards of living in a particular society.
- incorporates economic, political, and social elements into what poverty is
- form of societal exclusion in that people lack access to things that others have like (internet access, proper clothing, paying for education, access to decent housing)
absolute poverty
lack of money for basic human needs (food, shelter, and clothing)
- solely focused on the economic aspect of poverty
- even if a country is growing economically, it may not benefit those in absolute poverty
