resources Flashcards
what are food miles
the distance that food travels from producer to consumer
-in UK = travels nearly 200billion miles annually
how is water use made to be more sustainable
-grey water schemes= recycling of lightly used water e.g. families in mexico city capture water & pipas scheme
-rainwater harvesting e.g. Isla urbana
-aquifer recharge = recharge basin trap water and allow it to sink into aquifer
what is the SNWTP
-south to north water transfer project
-transfers water from west to south (surplus) towards the east (demand)
-aim to resolve difference by 2050
-used for domestic supply, industries, agriculture
-cost $62 billion
challenges of the snwtp
-350,000 people displaced
-water taken from south - risk of water defecit
-pumping stations use electricity to pump water uphill
-wildlife disturbed by flooding + mixing water from rivers
opportunities of SNWTP
-water supplied to over 200million people in north
-water clean reducing health risks
-help reduce desertification
-water available for irrigation of land
how is water supply managed
-divert supplies, water transfers= take water where there is a surplus (north) to a deficit (south) e.g. Ely Ouse Essex transfer schemes
-dams & reservoirs= kielder dams + 3 gorges dam (China) $32 billion
-desalination= process of removing minerals from salt water, increasing supply of fresh water
impact of water insecurity
-sub-saharan desert= girl walk 200hours each a year
-waterborne diseases e.g. cholera - 4million annually affected + schistosomiasis
-food production= irrigation in arid areas can increase yield by 400%
