Q

Define the term energy mix and describe the UK energy mix.

A

The proportion of different energy sources used by a country.
In the UK we are still reliant on fossil fuels with 84% of our energy coming from fossil fuels such as natural gas We are increasing our use of renewable sources such as wind and hydro power

Q

Explain how and why the demand for energy has changed

A

Demand for energy increased globally.
This is because population is rising, increased industry in emerging countries. Plus as technology has advanced and standards of tiving improved, we now have more energy using gadgets at home

Q

Explain 1 way organisations can be more sustainable in their energy use

A

Large organizations such as McDonalds can reuse the cooking oil from their restaurants to power their delivery Lorries. This reduces the need for fossil fuels

Q

Explain one way an emerging country is trying to manage its energy in a sustainable way

A

China - increasing its use of hydroelectric power for example the 3 gorges dam. The dam can be used as a water supply as well as
generduny execurry, when reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
There are problems though, as the dam flooded large areas of land which meant people had to be relocated

Q

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of shale gas as an energy source

A

It can be a cleaner source of gas than traditional drilling methods and will allow power stations to run as they do now, However, many people are
concerned about potential environmental impacts such as pollution of the ground water

Q

Explain the advantages and
disadvantages of wind power on the environment

A

• Cleaner as do not produce ercenhouse gases. so reduces the warming of the atmosphere. London array predicted to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 925000 tonnes a year

  • Can lead to the deaths of birds as they fly into the turbines the actual production of the blades and turbines does emit carbon dioxide

Q

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of wind power on people

A

• • In the Uk which has a lot of wind. it can generate large amounts of electricity. It does not produce greenhouse gases so lower levels of gas’s in the atmosphere Can be located out at sea, which has less of a visual impact for people.

• • Can be very noisy and people do not like to live close to them (newer ones are quieter).
The turbulence created by the blades can affect the microclimate of an area.

Q

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of coal as an energy source

A

many countries nave large resources es china, so it is cheap source of energy for them. It is efficient to use coal in power stations to generate electricity.
Negative = releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide which leads to warming of the atmosphere Open cast mining can cause pollution of water systems and the ground.
