Resource Management Flashcards
What are biotic resources? Give an example in your answer.
Resources that are living (or have been living). They come from the biosphere and include animals, plants and fungi.
What is meant by resource exploitation?
when we overuse a resource and in doing so destroy either it or the environment it is in.
What is meant by sustainable development?
Development that meets the needs of todays population, without damaging the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Explain how oil extraction is an example of exploiting the environment.
can cause widespread pollution in the areas where the oil is being extracted. This can lead to loss of habitats, and also cause illnesses in local communities
Describe the global distribution of minerals and fossil fuels
Minerals ( gold + iron ) found in areas of volcanic activity. Australia is a main producer of minerals. Fossil fuels are found in sedimentary rocks and the main reserves are in the Middle East eg, Kuwait
Describe the importance of 2 natural resources to the Uk
The UK has its own oil and natural gas reserves in the North Sea. = needs to import less for energy
The temperate climate means water resources are plentiful,
though there is an uneven distribution, ( more supply in north less demand south east )
Define the term consumption and give an example of a resource consumed globally
how much of a natural resource we use, either globally or at a country level.
Food consumption is uneven across the globe.
Countries such as USA have high calorie intakes, whereas countries such as Ghana have lower levels
Explain how overfishing is an example of exploiting the environment
Unsustainable fishing has led to fish stocks falling to dangerously low levels.
This then impacts on the marine ecosystem as the predators who rely on the fish as a food will starve
Explain how deforestation in the rainforest is an example of exploiting the environment
Trees in the rainforest are been cut down to make way for palm oil plantations or for commercial logging.
This results in loss of plant and animal species in the rainforest.
leads to increased soil erosion as the heavy rain falls on the cleared land.
This means tne land connot be used for farming plus soil gets into rivers and pollutes them
Define non-renewable resources. Include an example in your answer.
These take millions of years to form and so cannot replenish quickly. Many are destroyed as we use them. Examples include coal and uranium.
Define renewable resources. Include an example in your answer.
These are resources that can be replenished in a short space of time and therefore can reused. Renewable energy resources include wind power.
What are abiotic resources? Give an example in your answer.
These are non-living and come from the atmosphere, lithosphere or hydrosphere.
They include water, sunlight and minerals.
