Resitance To Social Influence Flashcards
What are the two things social support can help people resist
- Conformity
2. Obedience
Evidence for social support for conformity (asch)
- The non-conformist doesn’t have to be right, simply someone else not following majority enabled resistance
- Person acts as a ‘model’
- Once start confirming again the effect goes
Evidence for social support for obedience
Milgram
- Milgram variation:
- Obedience dropped from 65 to 10% when participant joined by disobedient confederate
- Acts as a model
Research support- resistance to conformity
Allen and Levine (1971)
- Conformity decreased in Asch type study even when dissenter wore thick glasses
- Shows residence isn’t just following but actual allows them to be free
Research support- resistance to obedience
Gamson et al (1982)
- Groups had to help ooo company run smear campaign
- 88% of groups rebelled
- Shows link of peer support and residence
Describe internal locus of control
Believe things that happen to them are controlled by themselves
Describe external
Believe things happen to them outside of their control
Continuum
LOC is a scale with low internal and external in the middle and high internal/ external either side
Why is someone with an internal LOC more likely to resist social influence
- Takes full responsibility for their actions and behaviour
- So more likely base decisions off their own beliefs, thus resisting pressure from others
What’s the second link with high internal LoC and resistance
Tend to be more self-confident, high intel and less need to social approval
Research support for LOC
Holland (1967)
- Repeated milgrams study
- Measured LOC
- 37% of internals, 23% of externals did not go to 450v
- Intervals showed greater resistance to authority
- Increases validity of LoC explanation
Contradictory research for LoC
Twenge et al (2004)
- Analysed data from American LoC studies from 1960-2002
- Showed people have become more resistant but also more external
- Opposite of what LOC predicts so challenges link between LoC and resistance
Limited role of LoC
LoC only comes into play in unfamiliar situations as precarious experience of obey/ not obey is more important
