Resistant pathogens Flashcards

1
Q

How do pathogens become resistance?

A
  1. Pathogen population had varying ability to resist drug as some are susceptible and some resistant.
  2. Drug kills most susceptible pathogens first.
  3. Remaining population becomes resistant.
  4. Exposure to sub-lethal dose of medication allows bacteria to develope resistance by chance mutations.
  5. Over time, resistance of population increases

Q

What are examples of aseptic technique when culturing bacteria ?

A

Working near open flame to create zone of sterile air, heat treating metal items to sterilise, open bottles at 45 degrees to reduce SA for contamination, flame neck of bottle to expand air around and prevent spores from falling in

Q

Why do you sellotape the petri dish with 2 short strips?

A

Prevent anaerobic bacteria from growing which is very hazardous and ensure enough oxygen for bacteria to survive
