Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What is social support
Presence of people who resist pressures to conform can help others to do the same
They act as models to show resistance is possible
It also stops obedience - shown in one of milgrams variations
What is locus of control
Sense we all have about what directs events in our lines
What is internal and external locus of control
Internal - they are mostly responsible for what happens to them
External - things happen without their control and outside forces
What types of locus of control means you are more resistant to social influence
People who have an internal locus of control are able to resist to pressures
They tend to be more self confident and have less need for social approval
What research evidence supports the link between LOC and resistance to obedience
Holland related milgrams study and measured wether participants were internals or externals
He found 37% of internals didn’t continue to Higest shock
Only 23% of external didn’t continue
This increases the validity of LOC
Why may the loc in resisting social influence may have been exaggerated
It only comes into play in novel sitiuations and has little influence on our behaviour in familiar situations where previous experience is more important
