Minority Influence Flashcards
What is minority influence
Situations where one person or a small group of people influences the beliefs of other people
It leads to internalisation
Who demonstrated minority influence and how did they
Moscovici st al
6 people were asked to view a set of 36 blue coloured slides that varied in intensity and state wether they were blue or green
There were 2 confederates in each group who consistently said the slides were green
32% gave the same answer as the minority on at least one trial
What are the 3 factors on minority influence
Consistency
Commitment
Flexibility
What is consistency
They keep the same beliefs over time and between individuals which draws attention of others and makes them rethink their views
What is commitment
Minority shows dedication by make personal sacrifices and take risks making majority groups pay even more attention
What is the augmentation principle
Person performs an action when they know there are constraints / risks
Their motive for acting must be stronger and more people notice
What is flexibility
Minority needs to adapt their point of view and accept reasonable counter arguments
Strike a balance between consistency and flexibility
What research support is there for consistency
Moscovici
Wood et al metaanalysis of 100 similar studies and going that no tours who were most consistent were most influential
What is a limitation of minority influence research
They are artificial tasks
So lack external validity and limited in what it tells us about real life situations
