resistance to social influence Flashcards
what is resistance to social influence?
the ability to withstand the social pressure to conform to the majority or obey a legitimate authority
what is social support?
the presence of a person who resists the pressure to conform or obey and act as a role model allowing others to do the same
how did Asch’s unanimity variation prove the effect of social support on conformity?
when one of the confederates voted against the majority the ppt conformed less and was able to think for their selves
what are the limitations for social support to resist conformity
soon as the role model starts conforming the others also do (Asch)
how did Milgram’s experiment show the effect of social support on obedience?
when the participant was joined by a confederate who disobeyed obedience dropped for 65% to 10%
who proposes the locus of control?
Rotter
what does it mean to have a internal locus of control?
to believe we mainly have control of our actions and the effect they have
what does it mean to have a external locus of control
we are not in control of our actions or their consequences
What side of the LOC spectrum is more likely to resist social influence?
internal LOC as they will fell responsible for their actions, they may also be more confident and have less need for social approval
how does Gamson et al prove the effect of social support on resistance to obedience?
he replicated Milgram’s study using groups of ppts and found only 22% were fully obedient compared to the original 65%
What are the criticism of the LOC?
Twenge et al’s meta-analysis showed over time people how become less obedient but more external
how does Holland’s research support the LOC explanation?
by repeating Milgram’s base line study they also measured if ppts were internal or externals. they found that 37% of externals proceeded to 450 volts , where as only 23% of internal proceeded to 450 volts
