resistance to social influence Flashcards
explanations for resistance to social influence
social support
locus of control (LOC)
social support - resisting conformity
pressure to conform is reduced if others are not conforming
a dissenter is a model and shows the majority is no longer unanimous
allows people to follow own conscience
social support - resisting obedience
pressure to obey can be reduced if another person is disobeying
a disobedient figure may challenge legitimacy of authority
locus of control
a sense of what directs the events in our lives, internal or external sources
internal locus of control
ppl with internal locs place responsibility in themselves, doing badly in exam bc of lack of revision
external locus of control
ppl w external locs belive that control is out of their hands and believe events are decided by external factors - bad result due to bad grades or bad luck
what is the loc scale
scale between high internal and high external LOC , meaning ppl dont have to just rely on one or the other
what loc shows greater resistance to social influence
internal loc are more likey to resist conforming or obeying
if they take responsibility for their actions, they will base descisions on their own beliefs
people with internal locs are more intelligent and less concerned about public appearance meaning they will not do whatever gets the most approval
evaluation of resistance to social influence
+evidence in the role of support in resisting conformity
-only a limited role of loc - new situations
+evidence to support role of loc in resisting obedience
-not all research supports loc in resisting obedience - ppl have become more independent but more have an external loc would expect them to have internal
+evidence for the role of support in dissenting peers
-cultural bias - research done on western cultures - results may change if done on other cultures
