social support
the presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can others to do the same, these people act as models to show others that resistance to social influence is possible
- innate desire to fit into the group and be accepted
locus of control
how we perceive certain events
internals: believe you’re in control of your life, what happens is a result of your efforts
externals: passive in experience, put blame on externa; factor, more likely to be in an agentic state
strength: the importance of response order
- allen and levine studied whether the respons position of the person providing social support made any difference to a participant resisting the majoirty
- 1 condition: confederate answered first, giving correct answer, all others gave the wrong one real pt always answered last
- 2 condition: confederate answered 4th
- support was given in 1st > 4th
- first answer produces an initial commitment
limitation: people are more external than they used to be
- research sugggests a historical trend on LOC, with young people becoming increasinly external
- meta-analysis Twenge et al
- found that young americans increasinly believed that their fate was determined more by luck and powerful others rather than their own actions, compared to samples between 1960 and 2002
