Residential Segregation 1 Flashcards
Where did zoning first occur and what were the reasons for it?
Zoning started on New York City’s Fifth Avenue luxury retail establishments in the 1930s, to rid the area of adjacent garment factory lofts. Some saw it as a way to improve housing for the poor. They claimed that mixing factories with residences was bad for families’ health, safety, and welfare.
What are the 5 effects from zoning according to Shlay and Rossi (1981)?
1) Zoning limits housing density 2) Zoning create increasingly segregated neighborhoods in terms of housing tenure 3) Increases trends in which households are sorted according to stages in the family life cycle. 4) Suburban zoning increases NH income segregation. 5) suburban zoning may maintain established patters by including or exluding the types of people who can afford to live there.
What fraction of blacks lived in hypersegregated areas from the 1980 census?
1/4 (Massey & Denton 1989)
What were the 5 measures of segregation that Massey and Denton looked at in their 1989 paper?
evenness, exposure, clustering, centralization, concentration
What do we miss out on seeing with a conditional measure of integration, such as the entropy index?
the racial composition of a neighborhood, such as percent white (Maly 2000)
