Reshearch and psychology Flashcards
What is the main difference between correlation and experiment?
the amount of control you have over subjects
correlation-none, very little
experiment- great, very much
Describe the difference between research methods (correlation, experiment, survey, case study, natural observation)
they provide different kinds of information
positive and negative correlations
posotive- when both variables move in the same direction
negative- when both variables move in different direcitons
What is Survey Bias
when the questions in a survey are phrased bad so you dont understand or get the problem right. the questions should be clear.
What is a Placebo Effect
an intervention that resembles medical therapy but has no affect
What is Random Sample
a way of selecting people for experiments without bias
Random Assignment?
when you assign those people to random experimental and control groups. to eliminate bias
Control Group
a group that you dont change anything for. (they get the dependent variable but dont get the independent variable)
experimental group
A group different from the control group. (they get the dependent variable and the independent variable)
Independent Variables
the variable that changes with the experimental group. cause for comparison
Dependent Variables
the variable that stays the same for both groups
Strength of correlations
the strenght of relation between the two variables
What is a Double-Blind?
when neither reashercher nor subject know if they got the independent variable. it elimanates bias
What are some Problems with Experiments?
sometimes there are special cases where the outcome doesnt apply to everything.
What is the APA and what does it do?
APA-American Psychology Association
it promotes the knoledge of psychology so a nation can have more health and welfare.
Describe the different types of Research Settings.
Naturalistic setting- where the subject is observed in their natural habitat without variable involvment(no changes)
Experimental setting- studying someones behavior in a controled enviornment (no real world)
What are Testimonials
a statment in support of a particular point of view. very biased
different scatterplots, what type of correlations do they show?
scatterplots are used to show the correlation strength between two variables(posotive or negative)
survey
a way to obtain informantion by asking many indivisuals
case study
an in-depth analysis of the thoughts, feelings. belifes, experienses, behaviors, or problems of a single indivisual
Experiment
a method for indentifying cause-and-effect relationships by following a set of rules and guidlines that minimize bias
correlation
an association or relationship between two variables
scatter plot correlation
scatter plot graphs used to represent the correlation strength between two variables
