reserch methods Flashcards
overview
content analysis is a type of observational technique which involves studying people through qualitative data.
what does it do
helps to classify responses in a way that is systematic, which can allow clear conclusions to be drawn. It involves drawing up coding categories and counting how often the categories occur. This way qualitative data is converted into quantitive data.
conducting a content analysis
- define what your research question is
- decide what you are going to analyse and how you will collect it.
- developing a list of coding categories
4.pilot it and make any changes needed - count the number of categories that occurred
6.check the reliability of the content analysis by comparing scores with others.
coding
coding is researching developing categories for the data to be classified.
thematic analysis
the reascher will identify themes and then read line by line noting if that line fits the theme
strengths
both have high ecological validity much of the analysis that takes place within the methods are basing their conclusion on observation of real life behaviour.
weakness
it can be very subjective. cultural differences may lead to inconsistent interoperation. as a result the validity may be poor.
