- investigates a contemporary (or recent) phenomenon within its real-life context, especially when the boundaries between a phenomenon and context are not clear
- often deals with the situation when there are more variables than data points (in other words, uses qualitative data)
- relies on multiple sources of evidence (data)
Case study can use both qualitative and quantitative data
