Research + Outcome measures Flashcards
What does research provide?
Research provides quality, timely and evidence-based health care that impacts positively on health and wellbeing.
What is a study design?
Refers to the framework or plan that guides the collection, analysis and interpretation of data in a research study. The research design provides structure and direction to the research process and helps to ensure that the study address the research questions and objectives effectively.
What are the three main types of research?
The three main types of research are quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods.
What is Quantitative research?
Quantitative research is a type of research design that involves the collection and analysis of numerical data. Surveys, experiments and quasi-experimental designs
What are the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative research?
Strengths of quantitative: ability to generalise findings to larger population and the ability to establish cause-and-effects relationships
Weakness include the potential for oversimplification of complex phenomena and the potential for researcher bias
What is qualitative research?
Qualitative research involves the collection and analysis of non-numerical data and typically focuses on understanding the why and how of human behaviour through observation and draws conclusions through non-numerical data. Ethnographies, case studies. And phenomenological studies.
What is the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research?
Strengths: ability to provide rich, in depth data on complex phenomena and the ability to capture the perspectives of participants
Weaknesses: potential for researcher bias and the limited generalisability of findings
What is evidence based practice?
Evidence based practice is related to properly interpreting and applying data or evidence from research.
What is validity?
Validity refers to the extent to which a research study measures what it intended to measure and is an indication of the accuracy and credibility of a study’s findings
What is internal and external validity?
Internal validity: refers to the extent to which a study accurately measures the relationship between variables
External validity refers to the generalisability of a study’s findings to other populations and settings
What is the PICO process used for?
PICO process can be used to frame and answer a clinical or research
What is the PICO process?
P = patient or problem: Who are the relevant patients, what kind of problem are we trying to solve
I = intervention (E = exposure), what is the management strategy, treatment, diagnostic test or exposure
C = control / compared to (C is optional - PIO) What is the control or alternative ,anagram, ent strategy, test or exposure
O = outcome. What are the patient-relevant consequences of the intervention/expsoure in which we are interested
What are the CMBA advertising guidelines?
Advertisements must not be:
Deceptive or misleading
Offer a gift or discount or inducement without terms and conditions outlined
Use a testimonial
Create an unreasonable expectation
Encourage, directly or indirectly, the usage of unnecessary health services
