Research methods - samplings Flashcards
What is a random sample
A sample where all members of the target population have a chance of being selected through a “lottery method” for example.
What is the first step of a random sample
obtain a complete list of sampling of all members of the target population
What is the second step of a random sample
The names are assigned a number
What is a systematic sample
when every nth member of the target population are selected
What is produced in a systematic sample
A sampling frame
What is a sampling frame?
a list of people in the target population organised in a particular way
what is a sampling system?
the Nth term used
What is a stratified sample
the sample reflects the proportions of people in certain subgroups within the target population or wider population
What’s the first step in a stratified sample
The researcher determines the different subgroups in the population
what’s the second step in a stratified sample
The proportions needed for the sample to be representative
What is the last step in a stratified sample
Each of the participants necessary would be randomly selected from the larger target population
What is an oppurtunity sample
Selecting anyone who happens to be willing and available and whoever is around at the time of their study
What is a volunteer sample
participants select themselves to be apart of the sample
