Research methods A03 Flashcards
What is a strength of Random sampling - P (ub)
It is potentially unbiased, enhancing internal validity
What is a limitation of Random sampling - P (d + t.c)
difficult and time consuming to conduct, complete lists of the target population can be very difficult to obtain
What is a limitation of Random sampling (ur)
you may end up with a sample that is still unrepresentative
Why can a random sampling end up being unrepresentative
The laws of probability can still result in a biased selection if it selects participants with a shared characteristic.
What is a limitation of Random sampling (r.t.t.p)
selected participants may refuse to take part.
What is a strength of systematic sampling (o)
It is objective
What is a limitation of systematic sampling (t.c0
- time consuming and participants may refuse to take part
What is a strength of stratified sampling (r)
produces a representative sample because it is designed to reflect the population and generalisation of findings become possible
What is a limitation of Stratified sampling (nr?)
The identified strata cannot reflect all the ways that people are different so complete representation of the target population isn’t possible
What is a strength of opportunity sampling (clc)
It is convenient and less costly in terms of time and money
What is a limitation of opportunity sampling (b)
- the researcher has control over the selection of participants and may avoid those they don’t like the look of (researcher bias)
-unrepresentative of target population because it is drawn to specific areas so cannot be generalised
What is a strength of volunteer sampling (e)
Easy and requires minimal input from the researcher and less time consuming
What is a limitation of volunteer sampling (v.b)
May attract a certain profile of people one who is curious and more likely to please the researcher
