Research Methods - Sampling Procedures Flashcards
Define: random allocation
Participants are randomly allocate to the experimental or control croup, and have an equal chance of being selected for either
Define: population
The entire group of research interest from which the sample is drawn
Define: sample
A subsection or smaller group of people chosen from the population of interest
Define: sampling
The process of selecting participants for a sample
Define: representative sample
A sample that represents the population in regards to participant characteristics. Includes random sampling and stratified sampling.
What are the non-probability and probability sampling methods?
Non probability: convenience sampling
Probability: random sampling, stratified sampling, stratified-random sampling, random allocation
Define: convenience sampling
Selection of participants who are readily available and convenient to obtain, may not be representative of the population
Define: random sampling
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected as a participant. Selection on one doesn’t impact the selection of another.
Define: stratified sampling
Dividing the population into strata, then selecting samples from each stratum, in the same proportions as they occur in the target population
Define: stratum, (pl. strata)
Distinct subgroups
Define: stratified-random sampling
Identifying all people within each stratum of research interest, then randomly selecting samples of proportionate size from within each stratum
