What 3 parts does the continuum of mental health involve?
Mental health, mental health problem, mental illness
Define: mental health
a state in which we have no mental complaints or concerns
Define: mental health problem
An issue that can affect the mind and behaviour, but is usually short term.
Define: mental illness
Psychological dysfunction, usually involving: distress; impaired ability to cope with everyday life; thoughts, feelings and/or behaviours that are atypical of a person; culturally or socially inappropriate behaviour.
What does mental illness involve?

Define: psychological dysfunction
A breakdown in cognitive, emotional and/or behavioural functioning, in which a person’s thoughts, feelings or behaviour differs from those that would usually occur or be expected of an individual in that situation
Define: distress
when a person is extremely upset
can’t dictate mental illness on its own
Define: impaired ability
the inability to cope with everyday life
can’t dictate mental illness on its own
Define: atypical
the way in which a person responds is not normal of them
Define: socially or culturally inappropriate
behaviour that is considered abnormal of society or of a specific culture
Define: psychotic illness
involves loss of contact with reality, in which individuals have difficulty making sense of thoughts and feelings or what is happening around them. May experience delusions and hallucinations. Eg. schizophrenia
Define: non-psychotic illness
When an individual remains in touch with reality despite dysfunctional thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Eg. OCD, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse
