research methods psych Flashcards
experimental methods
the manipulation of an iv to have an effect on the dv which is measured and stated in the results.
what are the 4 experimental methods?
Laboratory, field, natural, quasi
what is a labatory experiment?
where all the variables can be controlled.
what is a feild experiment?
more of a natural enviroment but the variables can still be somewhat controlled.
what is a quasi experiment?
the iv has not been determined by the researcher and it exists naturally.
what is a natural experiment?
iv is not bought about by the researcher.
what is an independant variable?
a variable that is changed by the investigator
what is a dependant variable
measured by the researcher and has been caused by a change to the iv.
what is an extranous variable?
any other variable which is not the iv affects the dv and does not vary systematically with the iv they are nuisance variables.
what is a confouding variable?
a variable other than the iv that affects the dv
what are the 4 types of hypothesis’?
null, alternate, directional, non-directional
what is an alternate hypothesis?
the statement you test when attempting to disprove the null hypothesis
what is a directional hypothesis?
specifies the expected direction to be followed to determine the relationship between variables.
what is undirectional hypothesis?
does not predict the exact direction or nature of the relationship between the two variables.
what are the 4 types of issues?
reliability, validity including internal and external
