Research Methods Final Flashcards
What kind of question does a two-group design answer?
“Is my intervention better than nothing, or is it better than the current standard of care?”
What is random assignment?
It’s when participants that are already selected are randomly assigned to groups. (Creates independent groups)
What is a between-subjects comparison associated with?
Random assignment
What are the three methods of nonrandom assignment?
Matched pairs, natural pairs, and repeated measures
What is matched pairs?
When research participants are measured and equated on some variable before the experiment.
What is natural pairs?
When pairs of participants are created from naturally occurring pairs (Ex. twins)
What is repeated measures?
When the same participants are tested in both treatment conditions of an experiment
Which test is used in a two-group design that determines whether differences are significant?
T-test
What is an independent t-test used for?
Random assignment
What is a dependent t-test used for?
Nonrandom assignment
What value must Cohen’s d have in order to be considered small?
.20-.50
What value must Cohen’s d have in order to be considered medium?
.50-.80
What value must Cohen’s d have in order to be considered large?
.80 or higher
What kind of question does a multiple-group design answer?
“What treatment is best?”
Which statistical test is used for a multiple-group design?
One-way ANOVA
