How did the Assyrians rule?
Through terror; they tortured people horribly.
How did the Babylonians rule?
Through exile; they separated them from their God in their Temple.
How did the Persians rule?
By playing nice; they controlled with help of giving favors.
Why were the Deuteronomistic histories written? What did the authors want to know?
They wanted to know “why?” Why did God forsaken Israel, allowing their defeat by the Assyrians and Babylonians?
How did exile affect the YHWHist religion?
They adapted and began to see God everywhere. It was also the birth of modern Judaism.
How did the Persian empire treat the Hebrews?
They treated them nicely and helped them out in many ways.
What did Samuel have to say about taking on a king?
He doesn’t like the idea. He warns the people about the consequences of there being a king.
What kind of king was Saul? How did it end up for him?
He starts off very well, but ends up getting cursed by God because he was taking more power than what he was given.
What was the role of the Witch of Endor?
She helps Saul consult the spirit of the passed away Samuel.
What happened before Bathsheba and David?
Despite being king, David doesn’t go out with his troops in battle. That’s when he eventually finds Bathsheba, and mates with her without Uriah’s notice.
How did God confront David about the case with Bathsheba?
He separates the wives of David and gives them to his neighbors. The child that Bathsheba bores will die. David is disappointed with himself.
What are the different types of prophets?
Consulting, cultic, amateur, and women
What are consulting prophets?
Prophets that resolve specific problems such as droughts and battle strategies
What are cultic prophets?
Prophets that work in a ritual capacity; they receive divine responses to prayer
What are amateur prophets?
Prophets that are not trained or raised as prophets; called by God
