#Research Methods Flashcards
What does the Independent variable mean
The thing that we are in control of and change
What is the dependant variable
Is the thing that we measure the results of the experiments
What is operationalisation
When we say how we observe more complex or abstract things such as the intelligence or aggression levels of something
What is an alternative hypothesis
Where you make a prediction of how the IV will affect the DV
Null hypothesis
This is where you make the prediction that the IV will not affect the DV
What are the two types of alternative hypothesis
One tailed and two tailed
What is a one tailed hypothesis in comparison to a two tailed hypothesis
A concrete prediction of what will happen whereas two tailed suggests that there will be a change but there isn’t certainty of what it will be
What is an extraneous variable
Anything other then the IV which affects the DV
what is a lab experiment
standardized procedure
high IV
low EV
what is a field experiment
opposite to lab experiment, it is naturalistic
what is a case study
indepth look at a person or a small group eg genie
what is a covert experiment
person is in the study but doesn’t say ie confederate in milgrams study
what is an overt experiment
researcher tells participants they are in a controlled experiement
difference between participant and non participant
non p= fly on wall
ppt= involved in study
what is a plot study
like a practice study to test out any possible issues
what is a content analysis
looking at prescence of certain words, quantifying the amount of them and analyzing them.
what are the 4 sampling techniques
random
startified
volunteer
opportunity
what is a random sampling
every member of the target population has an equal chance
what is stratified sampling
breaking population into sub categories and selecting participants in accordance with the population
what is a volunteer sample
self selected, those who chose to be there
what is an opportunity sample
asking ppts available at the time
what are the three types of reserach design
independant measures
repeated measures
matched pairs
what is independent measures
different groups for each condition of the independant variable
what is repeated measures
same participants each time for each different condition
what is matched pairs
participants matched on certain characteristics and put into seperate conditions
type 1 error
rejecting null hypothesis
type 2 error
not rejecting null hypothesis
