Positivism
Research should be standardised, systematic and logical. Research design should ensure reliability. It should be value freedom (free from bias and not reflect any personal position that lead ppts to give certain responses) as well as displaying objectivity.
However, it’s argued that sociological lacks this as its underpinned by western values
Collection of quantitative data to convert to graphs and identify patterns and trends.
Interpretivism
Consider the world is socially constructed and that ppts should share their own meaning and experiences. Aim of sociological research is to get into people’s heads and experience the world from their POV(verstehen) Use of ethnographic methods e.g. Unstructured interview establishes rapport.
