Research Method (ch.2) Flashcards
What are the goals of science in research?
- description
- explanation
- prediction
- influence
What is research?
The systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge
How many steps are in the science method?
Seven
List the steps of the scientific method?
- Identify a problem to be solved
- generate a hypothesis
- select an appropriate research method
- collect the data (conduct your research or study)
- analyze the data
- draw conclusions from your data
- publish your results
What is hypothesis?
- A statement predicting the outcome of a scientific study
- A statement describing the relationship among variables in a study.
What is a null hypothesis?
States that there is NO significant difference in the population
What is the alternate hypothesis (research hypothesis)?
There is a significant difference in the population.
Name the two general research methods?
Experimental and Non-expeimental
What is Experimental Method?
-Involves the manipulation of one variable (independent variable) in order to measure its effect on the dependent variable
What is an independent variable?
- the variable that is {manipulated} in an experiment.
- it is considered the cause
Which variable is considered the CAUSE?
The independent variable
What is a dependent variable?
- the variable that is {measured}
- It is considered the effect.
