Q

What is an Independent Groups Design?

A
  • Where different PPs take part in each experimental condition (allocated randomly).

Q

Strengths of IGD

A
  • Order effects are not present as PPs take part once

- Data collection will be less time-consuming if all conditions are conducted at the same time

Q

Weaknesses of IGD

A
  • Different PPs need to be recruited for each condition = difficult and expensive.
  • A risk of PP variables affecting the results between conditions.

Q

Advantages of RMD

A
  • Results not subject to PP variables –> More likely to have valid cause and effect
  • Extra PPs do not need to be recruited

Q

Disadvantages of RMD

A
  • Risk of observing order effects as same PPs in each condition
  • If a PP drops out, data will be lost from all conditions of the experiment

Q

What is a Matched Pairs Design?

A
  • Where PPs only take part in 1 experimental condition, but they’re recruited specifically to be similar in relevant characteristics to PPs in other conditions.

Q

Strengths of MPD

A
  • No order effects - PPs take part in one condition.

- Tailored-PP matching process reduces the risk of PP variables affecting results between conditions

Q

Weaknesses of MPD

A
  • Different PPs need to be recruited for each condition - difficult and expensive.
  • Matching is a complex process and it will always be difficult to match PPs identically.
