Methodological Issues Flashcards
1
Q
What is Validity?
A
- The extent to which the experiment measures what it is actually supposed to measure.
2
Q
What is Internal Validity?
A
- When the researcher tests what they intend to test.
3
Q
What is Predictive Validity?
A
- How well a test predicts future behaviour.
4
Q
What is External Validity?
A
- The ability of a test to be generalised to populations and situations beyond the situation or population being measured.
5
Q
What is Population Validity?
A
- Refers to the extent to which the results can be generalised to groups of people other than the sample of PPs used.
6
Q
What is Ecological Validity?
A
- Where findings can be generalised to other settings other than the one it is being tested in.
7
Q
What is triangulation?
A
- Comparing results from highly controlled studies with studies that have had a low level of control.
- If the studies have similar findings –> More likely to be valid.
8
Q
What is reliability?
A
- Means that 2 or more measurements/observations of the same event will be consistent with each other.
9
Q
What is Test-Retest Reliability?
A
- A measure of whether something varies from 1 time to another.
10
Q
What is Inter-rater Reliability?
A
- When more than 1 interviewer is used to collect data for the research study.
11
Q
What is generalisability?
A
- Whether results or findings of research can be transferred to other situations or people.
12
Q
What is Objectivity?
A
- The need to be impartial and judgement free.
- The opinions of the researcher SHOULD NOT impact how the DV is recorded.
13
Q
What is subjectivity?
A
- Where the findings collected are based off of the researcher’s own opinions or interpretation of the situation.
14
Q
What is credibility?
A
- How believable the findings are.
- Based on the trustworthiness and expertise of the info source or message, as interpreted by the info receiver.
