Research design Flashcards
Define categorical variables
Each individual assign to a single group which has no numerical meaning
Define continuous variables
Scores can be ordered on a continuum with numerical meaning
Whats a between group study design
To show how people respond if one thing is changed or varied by the researcher
What variables are found in a between group study design
Independant and dependant
Whats a between participant design
Each participant is in one condition
Whats the advantages of between participant design
Less demand characteristics
Whats the disadvantages of between participant design
Large total sample needed, allocation to one condition could have ethical issues, could have differences between the groups of participants
Whats a within participant study design
Each participant is in every condition
Whats the advantages of a within participant design
Can get desired number of participants per condition, no ethical issues, less chance of having differences between groups
Whats the disadvantages of a within participant design
Demand characteristics, repetition (boredom / fatigue) practice effects and interference effects
Whats counterbalancing
Can stop multiple conditions affecting responses by systematically varying the order in which participants complete the conditions
Whats a true experiment
Random assignment of individuals to conditions
Advantages and disadvantages of true experiments
Advantages: reduces unintended individual differences
Disadvantages: Random assignment may not be possible, ethical issues
Whats a quasi experiment
Non-random assignments as researcher makes use of pre-existing groups
Advantages and disadvantages of quasi experiments
Advantages: can investigate differences between conditions in contexts random assignment isn’t possible
Disadvantages: could have unintended differences between conditions
