Research Articles and Quantitative Research Flashcards
What are the 6 main sections of a research article?
- abstract
- introduction
- methods
- results
- discussion
- references
Describe the abstract section of a research article.
Overview and purpose of the study
General description and methods
Highlights of results
Statement of significance of results
General conclusions
Describe the introduction section of a research article.
Statement of the problem
Clinical relevance
Review of current literature
Rationale and theoretical framework
Specific purpose and hypotheses
“Often concludes with a research question… although not always present, specific research questions are delineated at the conclusion of the introduction.”
Describe the methods section of a research article.
Study design
Criteria for and methods of subject selection
Description and number of subjects
Measurement methods and data collection technique
Data analysis procedures
Describe the results section of a research article.
Narrative description of statistical outcomes
Tables and figures that summarize findings.
Statements of support of the hypotheses or rejection of the hypotheses
Describe the discussion section of a research article.
Importance of the results
Limitations of the study
Suggestions for future research
Applicability of the results to clinical practice
Just a brief statement of the purpose of the study and its findings. It is usually phrased “the results of this study indicate…” or “this study demonstrates…”
Describe the references section of a research article.
Must include all references used in APA format.
How do you conduct quantitative research?
Focus of study.
Research question.
Hypothesis.
Collect data.
Analyze data.
Measurement of outcomes using numerical data and statistical data.
Concerned with relationship between variables.
Variables are the building blocks of the research question.
What are 3 types of research
Descriptive research
Mixed experimental-descriptive research
Experimental research design
Describe experimental research.
Considered the most rigorous.
The RTC is considered the gold standard of true experimental designs.
Basic and true experimental design
Experimental research must include…
One sample
One independent variable
Participants must be randomly assigned to groups.
IV must be administered as planned.
Confounding variables are minimized, and variables are controlled by the researcher.
One dependent variable on which all subjects are measured.
The hypothesis is attempting to show a cause-and-effect relationship between IV and DV.
What is a representative sample?
The study sample consists of the people who are the subjects in the research study.
The chosen sample should be a “subset” of the population you are studying. The subset should be a representative sample (target sample) of the population.
Population is a set of people who share common features.
The sample being studied should be representative of the population from which they were selected.
What is inclusion criteria?
The primary traits of the target population (representative population)
- Age, gender, sex, geographic location…
What is exclusion criteria?
Factors that would preclude someone from being a subject in the study.
The factors that are generally considered confounding o the results (that is they are likely to interfere with interpretation of the findings).
