Required practical 8 - alternative method Flashcards
What is the aim of this alternative method
To compare electrode potentials of different metals
Step 1
Clean a piece of copper and a piece of the metal using emery paper or fine grade sandpaper
Step 2
Degrease the metals using propanone and cotton wool
Step 3
Connect the copper to the positive terminal of a voltmeter using a crocodile clip and lead
Step 4
Cut a piece of filter paper to roughly the same size as the copper, moisten with 2.0 moldm-3 NaCl solution and place on top of the copper
Step 5
Connect another lead to the voltmeter and use a crocodile clip to connect it to the second piece of metal
Step 6
Hold the metal against the filter paper and record the voltmeter reading
Step 7
Repeat with other metals and compare their electrode potentials
