Required practical 2 Flashcards
Step 1
Measure 50cm^3 water using burette or volumetric pipette
Why not use a measuring cylinder
Uncertainty is too high
Step 2
Transfer into polystyrene cup with lid
Why use a polystyrene cup
Good insulator and has high specific heat capacity
Step 3
Weigh 4.00g of copper sulfate into weighing boat using an accurate balance (2dp)
Step 4
Using a precise thermometer, record temperature of water each minute for 4 minutes
What does measuring temperature for the first 4 minutes establish
Accurate initial temperature
Step 5
At the fifth minute, add the copper sulfate
What should you not do when adding the copper
Do not record temperature
Do not rinse the weighing boat
Step 6
From the 6th minute, continue recording the temperature at minute intervals until 15 minutes
Step 7
Plot a graph of temperature (y axis) against time (x axis)
Step 8
Draw two lines of best fit - one before addition and one after addition
What should you do with both lines of best fit
Extrapolate back to the point of addition
Calculating temperature change
The distance between the two lines of best fit at the point of addition
Data analysis
q=mcdeltaT
