required practical 12 Flashcards
investigation into the effect of a named environmental factor on the distribution of a given species
1
Q
list 7 abiotic factors
A
light intensity, temperature, water supply, nurtient supply, humidity, wind speed and rainfall
2
Q
list 3 biotic factors
A
competition, predation and disease
3
Q
how is percentage cover calculated?
A
- use a quadrat with squares
- count how many squares the species is in
- only count a sqaure if more than half of the square is covered
- calculate percenatge of squares that are covered
4
Q
method
A
- choose a 5x5m area to take samples from, use a random number generator to generate 10 sets of random coordinates
- use two tape measures to create a set of axes off which coordinates can be read
- place the quadrat at each of the coordiantes, placing the bottom left corner on the coordinates
- record the percentage cover for the chosen species
- at each coordinate, a measure of the independent variable should be taken
5
Q
graph
A
plot a graph of the percentage cover agaisnt the chosen independent variable (e.g light) and use a stats test to measure significance
