required practical 10 Flashcards
investigation into the effect of an environmental variable on the movement of an animal using either a choice chamber or a maze
what response can a choice chamber demonstrate?
kinesis
why can a choice chamber be used to demonstrate kinesis?
4 conditions can be set up (dark + dry, dark + damp, light + damp and light + dry)
the animal (e.g woodlice) will move to the most favourable condition
what factors must be controlled in this experiment?
number of animals
environemental conditions
time given for animals to choose
what statistical test is used to analyse the results of this practical?
chi-squared test because it compares the expected and observed values and tests if there is a significant difference
what do animals do when they are in unfavourable conditions?
they move faster and change direction quickly to increase their chances of survival
method
- set up a choice chamber to have four quadrants (d+dr, d+da, l+dr, l+da)
- use dark paper or cardboard to block out light, use a wet paper towel to make damp areas and use a drying agent such as anhydrous calcium chloride to make dry areas
- place 10 woodlice in the centre of the choice chamber using a spoon
- leave for 10 minutes
- record how many woodlice are in each quadrant
- repeat by moving woodlice back to the middle
what conditions do woodlice prefer?
dark and damp as they no longer move fast and change direction
