Reputation Flashcards
“Windowless”
“Neither bell nor knocker”
“The door was very strong the lock excellent”
(Metaphor)
Metaphor for secrecy and protection of reputation
As if he doesn’t want anyone to see in, or he doesn’t want any visitors. Furthermore, doors act as meeting points between good and evil in the novella
Great chocolate-coloured pall lowered over heaven”
(Metaphor)
Fog symbolises secrecy, hiding all the evil acts from heaven
The atheist interpretation of this is that Steve is saying the God isn’t truly all seeing/ chooses to block out areas of complete disarray instead of looking out for them.
Furthermore, a pall is “lowered over” a casket at funerals, symbolising the death of the city as a result of all the evil occurring
“I wouldn’t speak of this note”
After discovering a letter from Hyde was written by Dr Jekyll, he conceals the knowledge and says “I wouldn’t speak of this note” because in the Victorian era people tend to stay out of other peoples business in order to protect their reputation as they didn’t want to become involved
“God forgive us, god forgive us”
(Repetition)
Emphasises desperation, and the desire to be forgiven after seeing such a horrific sight.
Call on god can be out of shock
