Q

“Broke out of all bounds”

A

Jekyll was being overpowered by Hyde and is unable to repress Hyde’s impulsiveness. Linking to Calvanism, as he has carried out many sinful acts, Jekyll’s evil side (Hyde) has become stronger and so he can no longer over power him.
Furthermore, breaking out of bounds represents how Victorians had sordid desires which they would repress

Q

“My devil has long been caged, he came out roaring”

A

(Metaphor)
Jekyll sees Hyde as a separate person suggested in the pronoun ‘he’. Stevenson could be suggesting it’s dangerous for a person to cage their devilish side because it will cause them to act more extreme when it’s finally released, as “roaring” suggests the “devil” was more angry than ever.
This is critical of Victorian standards in society, where people were repressed in order to protect their reputations. Causing them to lock away their other personas, as suggested “man is not truly one but two” we know people have many different personalities
