Q

“Housed in separate identities, life would be relieved”

A

(Metaphor)
Jekyll’s desire to dissociate was born out of the desire to overcome values of Victorian society
Steve is highlighting his criticism towards the Victorian society as it forces people to create a separate persona for the public eye and puts too much pressure on people to be perfect all the time to the point that life isn’t enjoyable.

Q

“Man is not truly one but truly two”

A

Within everyone there is good and bad which links to calvanism. Stevenson was brought up as a Calvinist, the belief that everyone is made up of good and evil, and the more good deeds you do the stronger your better self becomes. But alternatively the more sin, the stronger and more powerful the evil self becomes.
Furthermore, links to the idea of original sin, where in a perfect world without sin, Eve was still able to commit sin as if Sin was a part of her and was passed on to all Descendants.
