Reptile, Amphibian And Fish 7 Flashcards
What are the factors affecting good captive care of reptiles?
Enclosure design Lighting Heating and temp Humidity Feeding
What happens if there is a lack of UV?
Reduces the amount of vitamin D produced leading to less calcium absorbed for bone formation
What is gut loading?
Feeding insects calcium rich/nutritional feed to address the Ca:P ratio issue in reptiles
What is oviparous?
Egg bearing
What is viviparous?
Live bearing
What is ovoviviparous?
Eggs laid internally and hatched inside
What are the three venomous handling techniques?
Snake hook
Snake tube
Snake grasper
What is chytrid fungus?
A fungus that affects amphibians and can result in their death- currently no cure
What are the 3 aquatic water types?
Marine
Brackish
Fresh water
What are lentic and lotic systems?
Lentic= ponds, swamps, mires- still water areas Lotic= moving/running water systems- rivers
What are the effects of ammonia on fish and how is it dealt with?
Very toxic to most fish species
Bacteria in biological filters help remove ammonia
What are the effects of nitrites on fish and how is it dealt with?
The bacteria that consumes ammonia gives off nitrites
Second stage of waste disposal
Poisonous to most species
Often consumed again by bacteria population
What are the effects of nitrates on fish?
3rd stage of waste process
Bacteria processing nitrites produce nitrates
Less dangerous than nitrites
What are the three type of feeders in fish?
Top feeders: scoop like mouths to help them feed on surface of water
Midwater feeders: mouth located at top of the body to grab feed as it falls
Bottom feeders: mouths under their snout to feed off tank floor
