Reproductive/Urinary Lab Flashcards
Penis
male reproductive organ that releases sperm and urine
Kidney
organ in the urinary system that filters blood; removes wastes from the blood; balances water in the body; waste and water come together to form urine
Renal Cortex
outer portion of the kidney, between renal medulla and renal capsule
Trachea
the windpipe; respiratory tube that connects the larynx to the lungs; air travels into and out of this tube
Tracheal Rings
comprised of hyaline cartilage that supports the trachea
Renal Medulla
innermost portion of the kidney; contains series of renal pyramids
Nephrons
functional units of the kidney; regulate water; filter blood producing urine
Left and Right Bronchi
singular-bronchus; trachea branches off into the right and left bronchi; each bronchus will continue to branch off into smaller and smaller tubes as you proceed into the lungs
Renal Pelvis
urine will collect in this area after it is produced; renal pelvis is connected to the ureters
Bronchioles
smaller tubes connected to the bronchus to the alveoli
Urethra
tube that carries from bladder to outside of the body
Vagina
canal that connects uterine body to outside of the body
Alveoli
structure in the lungs where gas exchange occurs
What lobes are in the right lung and the left lung?
Right- cranial, medial, and caudal lobes
Left- apical, caudal lobes
Right and Left Lung
main organ for respiration; gas exchange occurs in this organ; inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide
Diaphragm
primary respiratory muscle (in adults); posterior to the lungs; diaphragm contracts thoracic cavity expands and lungs fill with air; diaphragm relaxes thoracic cavity contracts and air is pushed out of the lungs
Ovary
reproductive organ that produces ovum (gametes) and female hormones; these gametes are released from the ovary into the oviduct during a females fertile period
Ureters
tube that carries urine from renal pelvis to the bladder
Larynx
voice box; cartilaginous structure that connects the pharynx to the trachea
Oviduct
reproductive tube that ovum travel down after being released from ovary; oviduct is connected to the uterus
Uterine Body
connected to the oviduct and vagina; the uterine body is where fertilized ovum (zygotes) will implant and develop into a fetus
How does the pig uterine body differ from a humans?
in pigs, the uterus is comprised of two upper chambers that are separate (uterine horns) and form into one single chamber (uterine body)
Scrotum
dual-chamber sac that contains the testes
Testes
reproductive organ that produces and releases sperm and male hormones; found inside the scrotum`
Bladder
organ that is used to store urine until it can be released
Epididymis
a convoluted tube that store sperm and connects a testes to a vas deferens
Vas Deferens
tube that carries sperm and connects the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Ejaculatory Duct
tubes that carry sperm and connect the two vas deferens to the urethra
Urethra
tube in the penis that carries both sperm and urine to the outside of the body; it is connected to the bladder and ejaculatory duct
