Reproductive System Flashcards
A set of organs and structures that work together to ensure the survival of the species by producing offspring
Reproductive system
Passageway for eggs from the ovaries to the uterus and provides the site for fertilization by the sperm
Fallopian tube or oviducts
Where a fertilized egg implants and grows into a fetus during pregnancy
Uterus
Allows fluids such as menstrual blood to pass from the uterus into the vagina. Widens during the birth of a baby
Cervix
Produces eggs (ova) and female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone
Ovary
Receives the penis during sexual reproduction, allows menstrual blood to exit the body, lets the baby pass through during childbirth
Vagina
A fleshy area covered in pubic hair, located over the pubic bones
Mons pubis
A small sensory organ located at the front of the vulva, sensitive to stimulation
Clitoris
A thin, elastic tissue that partially covers the vaginal opening
Hyemen
The opening through which urine is released
Urethral opening
Folds of skin that protect the vaginal opening and urethra
Labia majora and minora
Produces mucus to lubricate the vagina
Vestibular glands
The male organ used for sexual intercourse and serves as exit for urine and sperm
Penis
The sac that holds the testicles outside the body. Helps regulate the temperature of the testes keeping them slightly cooler than the body’s core temperature which is important for sperm production
Scrotum
A long, coiled tube located at the back of each testicle. Stores and carries sperm
Epididymis
Two oval-shaped organs within the scrotum that produce sperm and testosterone
Testes
Muscular tube that transports mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation. Runs from the scrotum to the penis
Vas deferens
Runs through the penis and carries both urine from the bladder and sperm from the reproductive system
Urethra
Glands located behind the bladder. Produces a fluid rich in fructose which provides energy for the sperm
Seminal vesicles
Gland that sits below the bladder and surrounds a part of the urethra. Produces a fluid that nourishes the sperm and helps in their mobility. This fluid makes up a significant portion of the semen
Prostate gland
Small glands located beneath the prostate. Produces a clear fluid that lubricates the urethra and neutralizes any acidic urine left in the urethra before ejaculation
Bulbourethral glands or Cowper’s glands
The muscle that prevents the urine and semen to be released at the same time
Internal urethral sphincter
What is the flow of the sperm cell?
Testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, urethra, penis, out
Process in which a new individual is formed by a single parent without gamete formation. The individuals produced are genetically and morphologically similar
Asexual reproduction
