Circulatory System Flashcards
A network responsible for transporting blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body
Circulatory system
Organ that pumps, facilitating the consistent movement of circulating fluid
Heart
Contraction phase of the heart
Systole
Relaxation phase of the heart
Diastole
Moves blood from the upper part of the heart to the lower part of the heart (ventricles)
Atrium
Pumps blood out of the heart and into the systemic or pulmonary circulation
Ventricle
Tubular structure that acts as a heart
Dorsal vessel
Delivers blood forward to body tissues
Ventral vessel
Ostia
Small openings in the heart
Assists in pumping blood to specific areas
Accessory hearts
Blood vessel with thick elastic walls to withstand the high pressure of the blood coming out of the heart. Has a smaller lumen and carries oxygenated blood away from the heart
Artery
Blood vessel with thinner walls and less elasticity. It has a larger lumen and contains valves. It carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart
Veins
Blood vessel which facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients and waste products with tissues and connects arteries and veins
Capillaries
Cells that transport oxygen via hemoglobin
Red blood cells (RBCs)
Cells that fight infections and support immunity
White blood cells (WBCs)
Aids in blood clotting
Platelets
The liquid component carrying nutrients, hormones and waste in the blood
Plasma
The circulating fluid in invertebrates with open circulatory systems
Hemolymph
The main body cavity in animals with open circulatory systems
Hemocel
Circulation where deoxygenated blood travels from the heart to the lungs where it gains oxygen
Pulmonary circulation
Circulation where oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart to the rest of the body
Systemic circulation
Circulation where deoxygenated blood returns to the heart via veins to complete the cycle
Return to the Heart
Type of circulatory system where blood is contained within the blood vessels and is mostly found in vertebrates
Closed circulatory system
Type of circulatory system where the blood or hemolymph is not confined to vessels but directly bathes the organs in an open cavity (hemocoel)
Open circulatory system
