Reproductive system Flashcards
What is Cryptorchidism?
A condition in which one or both testes fail to descend through the inguinal canal into the scrotal sac
Treatment of Cryptorchism
Orchiopexy, or surgical repositioning of the testis.
The goal is to place and fix viable undescended testes to a normal scrotal position.
Surgical treatment is indicated as soon as possible after 6 months and should be definitely completed by aged 2 because 1 - 2 years old is associated with improved fertility and testicular growth.
Nursing interventions of cryptorchidism
- Postoperative care to prevent infection
- Educate parents on avoiding vigorous sports activities and usage of straddle toys
Phimosis
Narrowing or stenosis of the preputial opening of the foreskin which prevents retraction of foreskin over glans penis
Treatment of phimosis
Steroid cream twice a day for 1 month
Surgical treatment with circumcision in severe cases
Paraphimosis
Retracted foreskin cannot be pulled over the glans resulting in edema and venous congestion
Testicular torsion
Tunica vaginalis, which normally encases the
testicle, fails to do so and the testis hangs free from its vascular structures resulting in partial/complete venous occlusion.
