Reproductive System Flashcards
Testes
two oval-shaped organs in the male reproductive system. They’re contained in a sac of skin called the scrotum
Vas deferens
transports mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation
Prostate
gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in male mammals and releasing prostatic fluid.
Penis
male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation.
Epididymis
highly convoluted duct behind the testis, along which sperm passes to the vas deferens.
Vasectomy
cuts the supply of sperm to your semen. It’s done by cutting and sealing the tubes that carry sperm.
Circumcision
the surgical removal of the foreskin from a baby’s penis.
Ovary
an organ found in the female reproductive system that produces an egg.
Uterus
a hollow muscular organ located in the female pelvis between the bladder and rectum.
Fallopian Tubes
either of a pair of tubes along which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus.
Vagina
the muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women and most female mammals.
Cervix
It allows blood from a menstrual period and a baby (fetus) to pass from the womb into the vagina.
Fraternal twins
the fertilization of two separate eggs during the same pregnancy.
Zygote
a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes
testosterone
testosterone helps boys develop male features like body and facial hair, deeper voice, and muscle strength.
menstruation
process in a woman of discharging blood and other materials from the lining of the uterus at intervals of about one lunar month from puberty until menopause, except during pregnancy.
barrier method
a cervical cap, male condom, and female condom and spermicidal foam, sponges, and film.
placenta
an organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy. This structure provides oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removes waste products from your baby’s blood.
ultrasound
ultrasound scan, especially one of a pregnant woman to examine the fetus.
amniocentesis
procedure used to take out a small sample of the amniotic fluid for testing.
pap test
looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
epidural
a procedure that injects a local anesthetic into the space around the spinal nerves in your lower back.
trimester
period of three months, especially as a division of the duration of pregnancy.
umbilical cord
a tube that connects you to your baby during pregnancy.
IUD
tiny device that’s put into your uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s long-term, reversible, and one of the most effective birth control methods
Ovulation
the release of an egg from your ovary, into your fallopian tube. It typically happens about 13–15 days before the start of each period
Caesarean Section
the surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions in the abdomen and uterus.
fertilization
action or process of fertilizing an egg, female animal, or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
Plan B
emergency contraceptive after unprotected sex
Contractions
when the muscles of your uterus tighten up like a fist and then relax. Contractions help push your baby out.
Diaphragm
the thin skeletal muscle that sits at the base of the chest and separates the abdomen from the chest
