Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle
the specialized tissue that is attached to bones and allows movement.
Smooth Muscle
located in various internal structures including the digestive tract, uterus, and blood vessels such as arteries
Cardiac Muscle
the muscle that is specific to the heart.
Excitability
the ability to respond to a stimulus
Elasticity
the ability to stretch to its full range of motion
Extensibility
the ability of a muscle to be stretched
Contractility
the ability of muscle cells to forcefully shorten
Fascicle
Nerve or muscle fibers
Epimysium
the sheath of elastic tissue around a muscle
Perimysium
the sheath of connective tissue surrounding a bundle of muscle fibers
Endomysium
thinner portion of the intramuscular connective tissue
Sarcolemma
the fine transparent tubular sheath which envelops the fibers of skeletal muscles.
Myofibril
fine contractile fibers, groups of which extend in parallel columns along the length of striated muscle fibers.
Sarcoplasm
smooth endoplasmic reticulum that abounds in the myocyte
Actin
involved with the motion, binds with myosin
Myosin
muscle contraction
Subclavius
stabilizes clavicle during movement by depressing it.
Serratus Anterior
moves arm from side of the body to front of the body. scapula protracts
Trapezius
elevates shoulders, pulls them together, and then tilts head backward. scapula rotates inferiorly, retracts, elevates, and depresses, the spine extends
Rhomboid Major
stabilizes scapula during pectoral girdle movement. retracts, rotates inferiorly
Pectoralis Major
brings elbows together and then up. flexion, abduction, medial rotation
Latissimus Dorsi
Moves the elbow back and spreads them apart. humerus extension abduction and medial rotation. scapula depression
Deltoid
lifts arms at the shoulders. abduction, flexion, extension, medial and lateral rotation.
Supraspinatus
rotates the elbow outwards. extension adduction
Teres Major
assists the infraspinatus in rotating the elbow outwards. extension adduction
biceps brachii
allows a bicep curl to happen. flexion supination
triceps brachii
extends forearm during a pushup. extension
pronator teres
turns hand palm down, pronation
supinator
turns hand palm up, supination
iliacus
raises the knee at the top of the hip, assists the lateral rotators, flexion, and lateral rotation
gluteus maximus
lowers the knee and moves the thigh back, extension
gluteus medius
opens the thigh as when doing a split, abduction
gluteus minimus
brings the thighs back together, abduction
abductor longus
brings the thighs back together, assists with raising the knee, abduction flexion
rectus femoris
moves the leg out in front of the body, tibia/ fibula extension, thigh flexion
biceps femoris
