Reproductive Neoplasms Flashcards
Name the most common neoplasms of the ovary
papillary and cystic adenoma/adenocarcinoma
- ovarian cortex
- common in the bitch
- papillary projections from the ovary resemble cauliflower
granulosa cell tumour, thecoma, luteoma
- mixtures of granulosa and thecal cells
- cystic on cut surface
dysgerminoma
- similar to primordial germ cells
- smooth/soft/grey with necrosis and haemorrhage
Common neoplasms of the tubular tract
leiomyoma and leiomyosarcomas
- smooth muscle tumours
- seen in vaginal, uterus and cervix wall
- firm, tan-white nodules
Common neoplasms of the testis
seminoma
- common in most animals, in cryptorchid testes
- germ cell origin
- white-tan, lobulated, bulge on cut surface
- usually benign, can metastasize
- non-functional
sertoli cell tumour
- common in dogs
- fibrosis (white and firm)
- may cause hypoestrogenism and feminization
- bigger endocrine effect but can remove easily
interstitial cell tumour
- well demarcated, yellow, soft, often contained haemorrhages
- often multiple, slow growing and caused compression atrophy
Common neoplasms of the penis
SCC
- head of penis, may also be on prepuce
- most common in horses
- desmoplasia makes tumours firm
- tend to ulcerate and become necrotic
- invasive
squamous papilloma
- benign, keratinizing, papilliform
- can progress to SCC
Prostatic tumour features
well recognised in dogs
CS : dysuria, obstruction and faecal obstipation
neuro signa if metastasize to lumbar region
Define a teratoma
a differentiated dysgerminoma that arises from a germ cell that has undergone a single round of meiosis
solid and cystic areas with hair, sebaceous material, sometimes nervous tissue/bone/teeth/etc…
usually benign
Define a CTVT
canine transmissible venereal tumour
contagious neoplasm transmitted by coitus and sometimes sniffing/licking
papillary projections from the epithelium that grow rapidly into ulcerated, friable masses
round cell tumour
